CONGRESS CONSIDERING IRAQ WITHDRAWAL

The Administration’s shameful response to Hurricane Katrina combined with continuing global terrorism has led both Republicans and Democrats to lose faith in Bush’s handling of the Iraq war. Amid escalating casualties and budgets, America remains susceptible to natural disasters and terrorist attacks, the insurgency in Iraq continues to grow, and the Administration has no clear plan for how to bring American troops home.

TELL YOUR SENATORS TO OPPOSE FUNDING FOR NUCLEAR BUNKER BUSTERS

The Bush Administration has once again asked for money to conduct research into a new generation of nuclear weapons: a "nuclear bunker buster." The Senate may vote on the issue as early as this week -- or possibly mid-July. We cut funding for this research from the budget last year, and if you lobby your Senator to cut funding now, we can do it again!

TELL CONGRESS WE NEED TO WITHDRAW FROM IRAQ

In the current edition of U.S. News and World Report, Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) comments that in Iraq "things aren't getting better; they're getting worse. The White House is completely disconnected from reality." Even more importantly, he also notes that "more and more of my colleagues up here are concerned."

ADVOCACY

Nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons are as great a threat today as ever before. Citizen action can have a profound affect on elected officials and the policies that they are responsible for making. Private campaigning of Congressional representatives by their constituents is a critical component of successfully winning the struggle against the threats of Weapons of Mass Destruction, and it is coordinated by the Council through timely e-alerts.

TAKE THE NUCLEAR OPTION OFF THE TABLE

As the New York Times recently reported, analysts say Iran is years away from producing nuclear weapons. At this critical juncture, real and meaningful diplomacy is essential. The US government estimates that Iran is five to ten years away from developing a nuclear weapon. There is clearly time for diplomacy.

IT'S TIME FOR AN HONEST DEBATE ON IRAQ

On Wednesday, April 5, Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle will go to the floor of the House of Representatives to make a bi-partisan call for an open and honest debate on Iraq. Thus far 76 Representatives have signed what is called a discharge petition to force the House to consider alternatives to the Bush Administration's policy in Iraq. A total of 218 total signatures are needed.

Ask your Representative to sign the discharge petition to demand an open and honest debate on Iraq!

UPDATE ON SENATE ELECTIONS

The 2006 congressional elections are crucial to the fate of a number of key national security issues. At this point, there are virtually no checks and balances on President George W. Bush. Congress, controlled by Republicans, refuses to challenge the President or even to provide much oversight.

GET TOM DELAY OUT OF WASHINGTON!

Tom DeLay is the virtual dictator of the right wing that controls the Republican party in the House of Representatives. Repeatedly reprimanded by the House Ethics Committee, DeLay is under indictment in Texas, facing charges involving illegal corporate campaign contributions and other violations. He should not be in Congress. In the 2006 election, DeLay can be defeated by Nick Lampson, a former Democratic Congressman who is also a proven supporter of arms control.

His tireless work to secure and eliminate weapons of mass destruction has earned him rightful praise from all quarters of the political spectrum. Although he generally supports President Bush's national security policies, this Indiana Senator, who faces re-election in 2006, deserves your support for his leadership on efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.
